Florida Senate to address controversial Senate Bill 2508

Sen. Ben Albritton speaks during a Senate session Feb. 17.

The Florida Senate is in session today and will be addressing Senate Bill 2508, a controversial measure which originally proposed far-reaching changes to Everglades restoration measures which would have undermined the LOSOM process and could have had a major impact on funding for the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir and other projects.

However, a significant amendment to the bill has been filed by sponsor Sen. Ben Albritton which strips out many of the worst provisions in terms of Lake Okeechobee management and funding. Other bad proposals remain, including proposed changes to the way state wetlands permits are handled, and ill-advised changes to the state’s Rural and Family Lands Protection Program.
