Uthmeier: Billionaires’ favorite candidate for Attorney General

The former CEO of comic book/action movie juggernaut Marvel has become the latest billionaire to shower big bucks on Florida Attorney General candidate James Uthmeier.

According to Florida Politics, Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter (net worth: $5.9 billion) and his wife, Laura, each gave $250,000 to the Friends of James Uhmeier political committee on Sept. 25. Perlmutter becomes at least the sixth billionaire to give to Uthmeier, along with at least eight billionaire-controlled companies.

Other billionaires who have contributed to Uthemeier’s first run for public office (he was appointed Attorney General by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2025):

  • Norman Braman: $60,000. Norman gave $37,500, wife Irma $12,500, and Braman Management $10,000. Forbes estimated his net worth at $4 billion as of Oct. 5.
  • The Reyes brothers: $50,000. Jude ($16,667), Chris ($16,667) and the David K. Reyes Living Trust ($16,666), all gave within a three-week period. Forbes lists both Jude and Chris’s net worth at $14.3 billion. Forbes lists David K. “Duke” Reyes’s net worth as $3.6 billion.
  • John Catsimatidis: $5,000. The NYC grocery and oil magnate is worth $6.2 billion as of Oct. 5, according to Forbes.

In addition to these individual donors, Uthmeier’s also gotten money from these companies, owned or controlled by billionaires:

  • Dream Finders Homes: $50,000. CEO Patrick Zalupski is worth $1.1 billion, according to Forbes.
  • Kalshi: $50,000. Founders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara each own roughly 12% of a company now valued at $22 billion.
  • Las Vegas Sands: $50,000. A public company, but controlled by the Adelson family, which Forbes reports has a net worth of $30.4 billion.
  • JM Family Automotive: $40,000. A trust partly run by Jim Moran‘s three children still owns the company, which reportedly has $24.7 billion in revenue.
  • The Villages: $25,000, sent as five $5,000 checks from five Morse family entities on the same day. Bloomberg reported that each of Morse’s children was worth $1 billion in 2018.
  • RaceTrac, $10,000: Owned by the Bolch family, which in 2015 had a net worth of $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.
  • Rocket, $5,000: Daniel Gilbert, co-founder of Rocket Mortgage and owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, is worth $20.1 billion, according to Forbes.
  • Koch GA Inc., $2,500: The Wichita, Kansas-based multinational conglomerate is the second-largest privately held company in the nation, owned by Charles Koch, net worth $76.9 billion.

Uthmeier also got campaign cash from several near billionaires, and siblings/spouse/children of billionaires, including Alex Blavatnik (who gave $15,000), brother of billionaire Len Blavatnik (net worth: $34.3 billion).

What do you suppose these deep-pocketed donors expect in return for their generosity?

And how do you suppose that might affect you, clean water and conservation in Florida?

Their backing is one reason Uthmeier has such a huge money lead over Democratic challenger Jose Javier Rodriguez. Between his committee and his campaign account, Uthmeier’s raised $11.6 million; Rodriguez has raised just $2.8 million.

Yet the latest polling has Rodriguez down by just one point, with 15% undecided.

As Rodriguez has said on the campaign trail, the Attorney General is supposed to be the people’s lawyer. Uthmeier, by contrast, is the billionaires’ lawyer, and their money can pay for a lot of TV ads.

But it can’t cast a single ballot — that part’s up to you.
